Pregnant women deserve to have a companion with them when they give birth. Having a partner of her choice present at this most intimate time in a woman’s life, together with the skilled midwife, nurse or physician attending the birth, not only helps to meet the birthing woman’s emotional needs, but also reduces the likelihood of cesarean section and extended labor and improves outcomes for both mom and baby. The World Health Organization endorses this right for all women, including those with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection.
As health systems respond to the novel coronavirus and debate this sensitive issue, we staunchly support respectful maternity care for women and the right of health workers to health and safety protections. Neither should be compromised.
Working together, guided by the evidence, we can ensure a safe and healthy birth for mother, newborn and the health care provider by their side.
