Group antenatal care provides women a safe space to share their experiences in pregnancy with peers and the support of a trained nurse or midwife. The intervention breaks down barriers between client and health provider, offering a learning opportunity for all on the pathway toward a healthy birth.

Dr. Leslie Mancuso is one of eight global health leaders to receive an Academy of Public Health Fellowship for “exceptional leadership, scholarship, and service in the field of public health.” Induction ceremonies to be held Nov. 2 in Abuja, Nigeria.

Dr. Blami Dao, Jhpiego Technical Director for West and Central Africa, was elected a regional trustee of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) at its World Congress in Paris, Oct. 9–12. He will serve a 2-year term.

“FIGO is teaming with the World Health Organization and other partners to develop a new guideline on postpartum hemorrhage, the leading cause of maternal mortality. It will be critical to ensure African countries are supported to implement it,” said Dr. Dao.

In this new research paper that looks at indirect causes of maternal mortality and morbidity in Nigeria, Jhpiego authors share that many women of reproductive age are unaware of risk factors for non-communicable diseases. They call for evidence-based guidelines on screenings and disease management to provide women with the knowledge and skills they need to take charge of their health.
